Mr. Michelson has served on both the Planning Board and the Historic Preservation Commission of the City of Plainfield, N.J. (population 50,000), over a span of more than 20 years, and is currently Chairman of the latter. He has had a very active role in policy formation, and the production of the City’s Land Use Ordinance and Master Plan. With a background in land use planning and transportation planning, he also has particular interest in the subspecialties of historic preservation, farmland preservation and conservation.
Among Mr. Michelson’s activities is longtime membership in the Plainfield City and Union County Republican Committees. In 2015, he ran for the New Jersey General Assembly, in 11 towns that comprise the 22nd Legislative District.
He has long been active in various civic and political forums, including Board or Officer positions with the Netherwood Heights and Van Wyck Brooks Historic Districts, Friends of Sleepy Hollow, and Log Cabin Republicans. He has lectured on various subjects, and is on the faculty of the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Institute for Continuing Legal Education.
On the professional side, Mr. Michelson has been named to “Super Lawyers of New Jersey” every year since 2009. He is a Certified Civil Trial Attorney, so designated by the Supreme Court of New Jersey, since 1999. He has done over 60 complete jury trials, and hundreds of bench trials, motion hearings and other court proceedings, and over 40 appeals, on numerous subjects. He has published letters and op-ed pieces in the New Jersey Law Journal, New Jersey Lawyer, Newark Star-Ledger, Somerville Courier-News, Des Moines Register and other publications.
Another branch of Mr. Michelson’s practice is Mediation and Arbitration. As a New Jersey Superior Court Mediator, he has handled well over 100 cases, with an excellent rate of settling nearly half of them. He also represents clients in the Mediation and Arbitration settings, both those that are court-sponsored, and those which are privately arranged by agreement of the parties. He has served as a private Arbitrator and a private Mediator as well, on numerous legal subjects.
Among the specific fields in which Mr. Michelson handles Mediation are land use, matters involving local governments or governmental agencies, and LGBT and same-sex issues. He also handles the subjects in which most of his trial experience was developed, such as legal malpractice, medical malpractice, construction law, real estate and employment law.
